EMDR Intensive Therapy In Pittsburgh

EMDR Intensive therapy offers a faster way to healing.  EMDR intensives are extended EMDR therapy sessions geared toward increasing the effectiveness of memory processing.  An EMDR intensive session is similar to a basic EMDR therapy session, so do not be intimidated by the word intensive.

Intensive simply means the EMDR therapy session is longer than an hour and focused solely around your traumatic memory so you can get ‘unstuck’ and heal faster.  An intensive can rapidly assist you in learning how to regulate your emotions while also helping you feel less distressed around traumatic events or negative life experiences.  The following describes what you can expect from an EMDR Intensive session.

1.  Your first session is similar to a typical mental health counseling initial assessment appointment.  This is where you will meet your EMDR therapist, explore your needs, and decide if EMDR Intensive therapy is right for you.  This session is a meeting where you and your therapist will review your history and measure your readiness for an intensive processing session.  During the session, your EMDR therapist will want to know the reasons for therapy and then take a brief history of your presenting problem and review past mental health history.  Your counselor will explain the process and the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model that EMDR is based on.  Further information and skill building will be provided throughout your sessions.

2.  EMDR Intensives are longer in length than a traditional counseling session.  Hence the term intensive.  Your EMDR therapy session will last longer than hour and will typically last from 3-6 hours depending on the type of session you booked.  Even though the session length is extended, you will not be focused on trauma the entire session.  The therapy session with your skilled EMDRIA therapist will ensure you learn emotional regulation strategies such as breathing techniques, guided imagery, and routine breaks.

3.  EMDR Intensive therapy sessions are designed to be more efficient and focused than regular counseling sessions. EMDR Intensive Therapy is geared to shorten the length your time in typical mental health therapy.  The therapy sessions are targeted to be more efficient and centered around your target memory.

4. You might only need one EMDR Intensive therapy session to achieve your desired results.  EMDR therapy significantly lowers distress around the traumatic incident.  Once that is achieved, you will resume normal mental health counseling sessions.

5. EMDR Intensives provide you with more healthy coping skills and emotional tolerance skills.  These therapeutic skills are targeted to help you through your daily life routines.  You will learn specific grounding and creative imaginary skills to enhance your recovery.
